You’ve probably heard of “Passive Income” aka “money for nothing.” Is it real? Is it honest? Is it something that you can do? The answer to all of these questions is the same: Yes.
Despite what some social media gurus will tell you, it’s not a matter of slapping some Adsense ads up on a blog and waiting for the millions to roll in. “Passive” simply means you personally won’t be working while the money is being made. Another word for this is “affiliate marketing.”
You know what you do well, and you also probably know what you don’t do that you’re always getting asked to do. If you know someone who does that, talk to them and work out a deal. Then the next time you’re asked to do, say, windows, you can say yes, you have a windows guy and he’ll come right over for a quote.
That quote should include a hefty percentage for you. A general rule for the cost of obtaining a job runs about 30% of the gross quote, and that is your starting point for negotiating a referral fee. Typical percentages range from 15% to 30% for this kind of work, plus a guarantee of reverse referrals from that affiliate partner.
For instance, if you’re a lawn care specialist who is often getting asked to provide arborist services or gardening, connect with someone who provides those services in a similar niche to you. If your customers are high end residential, don’t pair up with a service that focuses on businesses or low-end residential. You want their standards to be similar to yours, and their client base as well, so you can refer clients to each other.
Its considered improper to have more than one affiliate partner in any specialty, but you can pair up with any number of pros with different specialties: Painting, roofing, gardening, decking, or whatever it is that you get requests for on a regular basis. You can connect with one company in each field, and eventually you will have partners who can handle just about any kind of home care.
Customers will appreciate a well-connected professional who can solve all their problems with just a couple of phone calls. Your affiliate partners will appreciate work that essentially fell from the sky, that they didn’t have to work to get. And you will appreciate referral fees of anywhere from 15 to 30%.
